Dying Well in the Christian Community
Pre-recorded breakout session workshops
Mary Jeanne Buttrey, MD
Retired Medical Missionary
After completing residency in Internal Medicine, I joined OMF along with my husband. We served together in Taiwan from 1980 to 2014. Upon retirement, I unexpectedly began a journey with cancer. Nevertheless, just as God was trustworthy throughout our ministry in Taiwan, he remains faithful to this day.
In earlier centuries, Christians talked about dying well. However, now even in the Body of Christ, we share the culture's aversion to talking about death as well as a hope placed on medical science to hold death in abeyance. How can we encourage brothers and sisters in our churches to talk more about dying well in the Lord? Do we as physicians have a particular role in upholding both the one who is ill and those who struggle with anticipatory grief?
